The Specialty Coffee Association has confirmed that 2020 Re:Co and the Specialty Coffee Expo have both been cancelled because they could not be postponed. People who have registered should have received an email from the organisers. It’s not clear if they will be receiving an option of a refund, or whether their tickets will be held for the event in 2021.
Both events were due to take place in Portland, Oregon in April. On the page announcing the postponement of the event, Yannis Apostolopoulos Chief Executive Officer of the SCA said “Unfortunately, no other viable dates were available for the show to take place in Portland in 2020,” said the SCA in a statement. “We will be working with the SCA USA Chapter to explore options to hold the final US Coffee Championships of the year at a later date as appropriate. Re:co and Expo will return in April 2021 in the city of New Orleans, Louisiana.
Some people were wondering why it had taken the SCA so long to announce their plans for the event, but Yannis explained:
“When it became clear that it would not be possible to find new dates for later in the year in Portland, our negotiations with our partners focused on ending these contracts without putting the SCA, a non-profit association, in danger of legal retribution from these businesses, who are also experiencing similar difficulties amid this crisis.”
