BARTALKS INTERVIEW: MAVERICK CHOCOLATE

In our interview with Paul Picton, founder of Maverick Chocolate based out of Cincinnati, Ohio we cover a lot! Paul is an ex-engineer who travelled the world, always bringing back chocolate for his wife Marlene.

When Paul lost his job in early 2013, one of the main concerns was where they were going to get good chocolate from now on! With the typical engineering mindset, they decided to make their own, and Maverick Chocolate was born.

Paul has a solid understanding of finance but was unprepared for the obstacles, bureaucracy and roadblocks he would face in setting up a shop in Cincinnati. There were some painful lessons, and if you’re considering a similar venture, we recommend you watch this interview all the way through.

Paul’s chocolates have now won multiple awards and he’s expanded to open a second shop. We hope you enjoy the interview as much as we enjoyed making it. It’s available on our Podcasts page above. Make sure you subscribe to the video to be notified when we release new ones!

    1. There’s so many great places to find good chocolate, and it depends on which country you’re in. Maverick is based in the US, and there’s many superb online shops from smaller passionate chocolate makers in the US from well known makers like Dick Tayler https://dicktaylorchocolate.com/ and Dandilion https://store.dandelionchocolate.com/pages/home. Or go with an exotic International brand that ships around the world like Marou https://marouchocolate.com/where-to-buy/

In the UK, where I live, I love Chocolate Tree Scotland https://www.choctree.co.uk/ and in Asia you have my friend Toby https://www.podchocolate.com/ or brands like Fuwan from Taiwan who is famous for strange inclusions like shrimp! Fuwan sells through distributors worldwide, so I’m sure you can find one near you. Enjoy the journey. Quality chocolate costs more, but once your eye’s are opened you can never look back.
