STUDY CLAIMS COFFEE PROTECTS AGAINST LIVER FIBROSIS

Researchers in the US say patients suffering from the hepatitis C virus who consumed more than two cups of coffee daily experienced milder liver fibrosis as a result. Liver fibrosis, or scarring of the liver, is the second stage of liver disease, and is characterized by a degradation of liver function.

Dr Apurva Modi, the lead author of the study, and fellow researchers at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, found that for patients with the chronic hepatitis C virus other sources of caffeine did not have the same therapeutic effect as coffee.

The study was published recently in the journal Hepatology.
