CUP OF EXCELLENCE GUATEMALA 2020 WINNER

The 17th Guatemala Cup of Excellence (COE) 2020 announces Cercol’s El Socorro Farm’s washed Geisha Coffee the winner with an impressive score of 91.06 with Max Pérez’s Natural Geisha Coffee – placed second at 89.69.

Cercol Farm was the competition’s only coffee to receive a ‘Presidential Award’ and marks the third time it’s placed first in the Guatemala COE.

The Alliance for Coffee Excellence (ACE) said, ‘Diversification in coffee processing is what shone through with all the winning coffees demonstrated by the producers’ efforts awaiting for the auction on 28 July.’

The competition awarded 30 COE winning coffees and 8 National winning coffees that represented five processes and ten varieties. The processes included 1 honey, 1 washed anaerobically, and 1 washed double fermentation, 11 natural and 16 washed methods. 16 Geisha coffees were represented, with 9 other varieties making the additional 14.

COE competition was held on the international stage of ACE Global Coffee Centers (GCCs) in Norway, the United States, Korea, Australia, and Japan. All cuppers noticed the wide variety of characteristics represented in this year’s coffees.

Awards were revealed during the first-ever publicised virtual COE awards ceremony, live-streamed on Youtube due to Covid-19 pandemic.

However, this year served as a fuel of what is yet to come from Guatemalan coffee in the future. There is still a need to ensure this year’s coffees are rewarded for their quality in the auction. Opening prices for both the COE and National Winner auctions have been decreased to encourage participation from bidders.
