SUPPORT MINAS HILL COFFEE TO HELP VULNERABLE KIDS IN BRAZIL GET INTERNET ACCESS

Long-time GIMA (Intermunicipal Games for the Environment) supporter and green bean trader Minas Hill Coffee launches campaign to help vulnerable Brazilian children get internet access.

Since 2008 GIMA has given the children of the Alta Mogiana region in Brazil an opportunity to learn about environmental responsibility every year.

Past years, hundreds of Year 5 students would travel to Bom Jesus farm and join the competition between participating towns. The activities they complete are related to sports, environment, culture, and community. They grow values such as friendship, respect, excellence, bravery, inspiration, and equality. Prizes include soccer balls, push-bikes, and school supplies.

In 2019, after 12 years, GIMA has reached another level as it became a Cultural Expo focused on Sustainability and Environmental Preservation. They were able to establish new partnerships and financing through the Government of the State of São Paulo, and Secretary of Culture and Creative Economy. The event grew from 1 day to 4, as new activities were incorporated: music, theater, photography workshops, storytelling and seminars. In 2019, 6 towns, 2,800 children and 400 volunteers were involved in GIMA.

Unfortunately GIMA 2020 event which expected 4000 children from 8 surrounding towns had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, Minas Hill Coffee is raising funds to donate tablets with pre-paid internet so the children can connect and have access to home-schooling.

Minas Hill’s CEO – Marcelo Brussi said that half of the low-income families in Brazil don’t have internet access at home. Marcelo added that even though they were able to establish a partnership with a local manufacturer, it is still an expensive project, and their fundraising goal is much higher than before.

Each tablet costs AUD $140, and Minas Hill aims to distribute 200 units for the most vulnerable and isolated kids in the first phase of the project.

Marcelo said that Australian roasters have been so generous, and they hope this year they could beat last year’s donations and make a change in children’s lives.

Living through a pandemic has increased the sense of community and strengthened so many partnerships. We all need each other, and together we can do more. This edition will change GIMA and leave a legacy.
