CHINA CONSUMPTION

COFFEE EXPERT SEES CHINESE CONSUMPTION BECOMING INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT

The growing role of China as a coffee consuming nation was highlighted recently by a well-known figure in the industry.

Ted Lingle, Senior Advisor at the Coffee Quality Institute, told delegates at the 1st Pu’er International Specialty Coffee Expo in Yunnan Province, that he expects that although Brazil will be the leading consuming country in 2040, it will be followed in second place by China, and then the US, by then.

P&A’s Carlos Brando addressed the topic ‘Building Internal Consumption’ and described the tools available to fulfil Mr Lingle’s projection.

The event attracted almost 800 people from China and 12 other producing and consuming countries to what is traditionally a tea origin in China that has become the country’s leading coffee grower, accounting for 85 per cent of production.

The three days of the conference and exhibition were followed by field visits to farms and mills in the area. The event was organized by regional governments and the Yunnan International Coffee Exchange.

Mr Lingle’s remarks were reported in the latest edition of P&A’s coffee newsletter, Coffidential.
