Highlights from the 2010-2020 Report
Nestlé published a report on their achievements from the 2010 ten-year plan and has announced the goals for the next 8 years to 2030.
A few of the key points raised in their 2020 report;
- Nescafé invested CHF 350 million to date in activities they believe are essential to making coffee more sustainable.
- As they push into the next decade of the Nescafé Plan, we will integrate new concepts, such as Living Income.
- Their ambition is to achieve 100% recyclable or reusable packaging by 2025.
- The company noted that coffee farmers are among the first to feel the effects of climate change.
- If economic viability is not achievable, there is no incentive to improve environmental and social issues.
- They also believe that to include more farmers in sustainability, they need to be more innovative.
- Following on from this, technology should be leveraged as a tool for capacity building.
- The most challenging part of the job is to measure coffee economics.
- Farmers must conserve natural resources and address social issues in order to prosper economically. Conservationists, coffee companies and consumers can’t simply demand that farmers do these things. Instead, NGOs and companies are working side by side with farmers.
- Nescafé has increased the amount of responsibly sourced coffee they buy from their suppliers (and farmers) to reach 75% of their global volumes. Responsibly sourced coffee is traceable to the group of farms where it was grown. Traceability and compliance are verified by independent organizations.
- In certain cases, the assessments identify highrisk situations that require additional monitoring and action. This additional layer of compliance is aimed at protecting the most vulnerable populations.

- Coffee-producing countries Vietnam, Brazil and Colombia transfer 85-90% of the export price to growers. The average for other producing countries lies in the range of 60-70%.

Supporting farmers’ transition to regenerative coffee farming
- Regenerative agriculture is an approach to farming that aims to improve soil health and fertility. Nescafé will provide farmers with training, technical assistance and high-yielding coffee plantlets.

- Nescafé will be working with coffee farmers to test, learn and assess the effectiveness of multiple regenerative agriculture practices. This will be done with a focus on seven key origins, from where the brand sources 90% of its coffee.

Piloting a financial support scheme in Mexico, Côte d’Ivoire and Indonesia to accelerate the transition to regenerative agriculture
- Nescafé is committed to supporting farmers who take on the risks and costs associated with the move to regenerative agriculture. In Mexico, Côte d’Ivoire and Indonesia, Nescafé will pilot a financial support scheme.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions also by capturing and storing more carbon in the soil
- Nescafé aims to contribute to Nestlé’s Zero Net commitment to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. It will work with farmers, suppliers and partners to help protect agricultural lands.
