SURVEY SHOWS US COFFEE CONSUMPTION TRENDS DURING COVID-19

A survey commissioned by the National Coffee Association (NCA) shows US coffee consumption trends during Covid-19. Americans are still drinking just as much coffee during the pandemic as to before.

Unsurprisingly however, they are consuming their coffee at home instead of in coffee shops or restaurants. What is interesting are the actual numbers:

  • Coffee purchases in-store declined as online purchases soared by 57%
  • 6 out of 10 people drinking coffee every day
  • The average consumption is 2.9 cups each day

These results, produced from a survey show consumer habits for the period in Aug. 26 to Sept. 3 were similar to those in a poll conducted in January.

The pandemic’s impact on demand for coffee has been devastating, but there are signs that greater home consumption has offset falling sales at businesses.

The poll found around half of the survey participants have said they stopped drinking coffee in restaurants, and 22% have not had any coffee in the workplace.

Grocery stores sales spiked in the first weeks of the pandemic lockdown during mid-March, but by September, these figures had fallen by 15%.

The NCA said, App-based ordering, including delivery, rocketed up 63% amongst those who drank coffee in the last week. Drive through ordering increased 13% amongst those who drank coffee each day.

Online sales also went up by 57% as many roasters started to sell ‘coffee subscriptions’.

The real question being asked by the owners of coffee shops and in the boardrooms of the big coffee chains is — will the customers return?
