PORTLAND COFFEE SHOP GOES CONTACTLESS WITH ROBOT ARM

In J Coffee – Portland, Oregon USA serves coffee without human hands, hoping that it will be able to serve many more. It is not as fast as a person, but a robot arm flexes its muscle in the world of morning coffee. Soon it will be possible to order almost any coffee drink made entirely by a robot.

It is a robotic arm barista, which we have written about before, and it gets coffee from the grinder, twists it into the espresso machine, while guided by cameras, gently grasps and places an eight-ounce cup to catch the dripping coffee. The invention is designed by Joe Yang and several of his computer programming friends who saw the need for contactless coffee.

The owner Joe Yang stated that he wanted to design something that will help customers get their coffee without any human contact. He also added that human baristas should not feel threatened by the robot since there is still a lot that the robotic arm cannot do.

The owner thinks that the robotic arm could be ideal for internet orders of coffee drinks, left on a designated spot with a number, and customer’s name on it. The robotic arm’s programmers work late into the night to set the robot’s abilities. Due to Covid-19 pandemic, it doesn’t seem to be going away soon, Joe Yang wanted to be up and running with robotic online coffee by the end of the summer.
