NESPRESSO HITS 80% RECYCLED ALUMINUM COFFEE CAPSULE MILESTONE

Nespresso has released coffee capsules on the market made using 80% recycled aluminum.

The company said that this was part of its continued journey towards circularity, going further to minimize waste and maximize the reuse of product materials.

Jérôme Pérez is Nespresso Head of Sustainability, said that the company is improving sustainability and circularity. The company reached 80% recycled aluminum in its capsules. Nespresso said that aluminum also optimally protects the freshness and aromas of high-quality coffee, providing a barrier against oxygen, light, and humidity. The capsules are made of a thinner aluminum foil, each new capsule is produced using 9.2% less aluminum material and is therefore 8% lighter.

By the end of 2021, Nespresso’s goal is to have the full Original Line, and Vertuo ranges of coffee capsules made using recycled aluminum. The release of the capsules follows the introduction of new fully recyclable boxes for Nespresso machines, made from 95% recycled material, this March. By the end of 2021, Nespresso targets to have all machines sold in new packaging.

Nespresso has reached a global recycling rate of 30%. Since 2014, the company has invested about US$190 million in its recycling programs worldwide, with more than 100,000 collection points in 53 countries.
